Burlington Park Forest Preserve by Patricia Hayden
The main entrance for the Burlington Park Forest Preserve is tucked in a Naperville residential area on the north side of Douglas Avenue about .25 mile north of Jefferson Avenue. When you turn into the preserve, it’s a short, winding drive to the parking lot. It’s a fairly small lot and there is a portable washroom nearby.
After parking, I headed toward the sidewalk and saw an information sign about the preserve and the surrounding area (it’s a coyote habitat and you’re likely to encounter poison ivy if you hike off-trail). I continued on the sidewalk into the open area and saw a 25-person picnic shelter (that can be reserved). There is a lot of open, grassy space by the picnic shelter to lay down a blanket, play some games, or throw a frisbee.
As I walked past the picnic area toward the trail, I heard a train pass by and I’m guessing the preserve was named after the train line. The train wasn’t very noisy and didn’t detract from enjoying the trail.
While walking the short, turf trail (about .3 miles) I saw Wingstem, Jumpseed, and many mature Oaks. The majority of the trail is shaded and it looked like it had been recently mowed. Most of the trail was fairly even, but I did come across a few bumpy spots.
As I made my return on the trail, I had some company as I passed by the picnic shelter. Three deer were in the area munching on some grass. It was exciting to see them and as we stood observing each other, I wondered about all the other animals that call this forest preserve home.
